Katie Adler

Katie is from California and performed in school productions until entering university. Upon entering university, she put theatre behind her as it was deemed to have no real purpose any longer. After the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, she realized that life was indeed very short and her squelched desire to perform came bubbling to life. Later in 1995 she started the Kobe Charity Players, a theatre group that performed evenings of one act plays in a dinner-show format with all proceeds going to ARK (Animal Refuge Kansai). This she did until 1999 when the wild and wacky world of performing in a band threw her onto another path. Katie is a founding performer for the Nostalgic Nuts (musical theatre) and performs for Kyoryukan as well as The Voice.

Koichiro Asahi

Koichiro is a native of Kagawa Prefecture. Before graduating from High School and moving to the Kansai area, he says his life can be described as very common. That though changed rapidly after he became a student at Kansai University of International Studies and took his first theatre class. He now frequently talks about the joy of being in a play. This is his second show with The Voice as a performer, but his help at the back stage is now indispensable for The Voice. When not studying or rehearsing, Koichiro can probably be found outside taking photos.

Chris Davidson

Chris cut his teeth at an early age on comedic performances as an elementary school student, mainly when it wasn't asked for and always when it could push the limits of authority. He soon learned that he could control the audience's emotions through melodrama and used his talents to great extent in his defense against parental tyranny and governmental backlash. Various school plays, forensic competitions and coffee house expositions later, he emerged as a man eager to complete the circle and became a teacher, where even monkeys can fit in if they are funny.

Aya Louise Dean

This production is one of the first times for Aya to be on stage as an actress. In the past, however, she has been on stage a number of times as a ballerina. She took ballet lesson for 11 years, but she continued dancing on her own even after she quit taking classes. Aya was born in England, in 1986. Her father is English and her mother is Japanese; she has lived in Japan for 16 years, and presently lives in Kobe. The reason why she joined The Voice is because her dream since she was 3 was to act, and entertain people. Aya likes acting because she believes that it allows us to explore the beauty of humanity through becoming other characters, and by becoming other characters, acting allows us to live another person's life. Although this is her one of her first times acting on stage, she hopes that she can bring the audience joy and laughter.

Yaman is a native of Delhi, India currently living in Japan while his father is here on a 3-year official visit. He has studied at Marist Brothers International School graduated from high school in 2004. Throughout school, he took advantage of any opportunity related to acting, making speeches, recitation and performing on stage. Denise Haugh

Denise loves anything to do with the arts, but theatre is her newest exploration. This is her first performance with The Voice, but she has been working in the theatre in the Kansai area for the last two years. She started off performing in Kyoto at Kyoryukan with Peter Golightly who is a very talented performer in dance, theatre and music and also our good friend. She finds that her experiences in theatre have made her job teaching ESL even more of an adventure in learning and teaching.

Chris Hodder

Chris comes to The Voice after growing up amidst hobbits and sheep in Auckland, New Zealand. He is a keen rock-climber, enjoys snowboarding, watersports, playing the piano, and a good cup of coffee. Akira Kobayashi

A professional musician for many years, Akira Kobayashi has played the guitar in virtually every form and musical genre there exists. His experience ranges from working with a traveling musically improvised show which performed at various events for children and performing on a regular children's educational TV variety show (much like Sesame Street) as the part of the improvising musical team to creating radio and TV jingles, including an honorable performance of the Astroboy song in front of it's creator, 0samu Tezuka. In recent years, Akira's musical interests include studio recording work as both musician and producer, performances in various bands from Rock to Jazz and most recently, his arrangements for the new acoustic duo Son-of-a-Gun.

Mitsuo Kubota

Mitsuo teaches at Kansai Gaidai University. He always tells his students in his sociolinguistic seminar that people are constantly performing a variety of roles within society. Although Mitsuo does not feel he is necessarily a good performer as a professor, he thinks he does a pretty good job performing as a suck-up on the stage.

Matt Lee

Matt is from Toronto, Canada, and has been living in Japan for over a year. He teaches English in Kobe, and has family, including his twin brother, living in Japan as well. His acting experience consists of various skits and laughable circumstances at a summer camp north of Toronto. We're happy for his participation in The Voice show. He looks forward to continuing his teaching experience long into the future.

Kim directs plays whenever she can fit time into her hectic schedule as a psychiatric nurse at the local sanatorium. Sometimes she has trouble distinguishing between the actors and her patients but finds that both benefit from a bit of 'time out' in the 'bouncy room'.

Charlotte Marble

Charlotte came all the way from Eastern Canada to join us at The Voice, and we're happy that she did. Charlotte has been involved in musical theatre, drama, directing and working behind the scenes for a good chunk of time, although she won't say exactly how long. Her passion is painting: scenery, cityscape, portrait, still life, back drop for theatre - you name it, she'll paint it. Charlotte is currently working as an assistant English teacher in some of Osaka's High Schools and Junior High Schools. In the future, she sees herself as an Art Therapist working in her own "place of well being": an Art Therapy Clinic/Gourmet B&B/Community Culture Centre.

Karen Marshall

Likes/ Dislikes: I like the face of someone who understands something for the first time, people laughing and singing, and people who pursue their dreams. I don't like how some people close themselves off to new or different experiences by saying 'I can't'.

Why/ how I first got involved with the voice: I went to one of the first performaces, "Into the Woods" and loved it. I wanted to be involved and so I put my name down to be involved in future plays. Noone contacted me and I became busy with other things, so I never ended up pursuing it. Then a couple of plays ago I actually put my name down to be in future plays and followed up on it. The rest is history.

Actors that have inspired me: I can't really say I am inspired by actors or actresses. I like certain actors and actresses, but as I have never aspired to be one, I don't really look up to them as role models. Singers, on the other hand, are a different question...

If I could play any role, it would be... Julie Andrews in 'The Sound of Music', or Doris Day in 'Calamity Jane', definitely a musical.

My other interests: I do Shorinjikempo, learn Japanese, play the clarinet, draw, read and just take time out to be with friends.

My favourite colour, vegetable etc: I like black and green best. As far as a vegetable, I like sweet potatoes. Japanese foods- Maguro Sushi, Shabu Shabu and Okonomiyaki! I also love coffee and I am not really sociable in the mornings until I have had at least one coffee.

In addition to working with The Voice, he is also an actor and sound technician for Gekidan Forum (http://hw001.gate01.com/syunta/), a theatrical company based in the Kansai area, and on July 26th and 27th, he will play the mayor in Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Charlotte Mitchell

Charlotte is from Norwich, England. She has been living in Japan for 2 years. She is a Herbalist by trade and an author. Performing in The Voice's Christmas was only her second performance on stage, since appearing in Toad of Toad Hall at the age of 10.

Shoji Miyanaga

On stage, he's been unintentionally specializing in public servants as of now, but off-stage, he is a freelancer with no uniforms. When The Voice show draws near, he has to push Kim and Gerald to provide him with information for editing of the flyer and program.

NAO

Although she didn't intend to, Nao has become an established comedienne: in her 17-year career as an actress, more than half of the shows she has been in have been comedies. However, she jokes, with a straight face, that serious dramatic parts are much more difficult to play because her true "serious" nature might just be revealed to the world if she did.

Chisa Negishi

Chisa is a university student majoring politics. Her theatrical debut was in nursery school when she played Buddha, who just stood there. She is now, for her age, an experienced actress when it come to playing mother roles, as this will be her third consecutive year playing a mother on stage. She likes reading and walking, although she is far too busy these days to merely read a book. She is hoping to immerse herself in a good book over the upcoming summer holiday.

Janine Nicholas

Janine first got involved in theatre during High School, acting in minor roles in Shakespeare productions as well as joining the school choir. Since then she has not acted until recently but has always enjoyed attending local productions. Coming from South Africa, she has seen many changes in the theatre world over the last few years. Janine teaches in Kobe and decided to get involved with The Voice after attending one of our shows.

Mio Nishikata

Starting out as a backstage hand in high school, she moved up to backstage professional just before high school graduation last year. In December 2002's Christmas show, Mio acted as one of Santa's helpers and had a great time singing with our chorus group as well. In Moshi, Moshi?, Mio took the plunge and made her acting debut with us as Billy in 1-900-DESPERATE. When asked how she feels about her role, she comments that despite the challenge involved, it is great fun!

Jack O'Ben

Jack made his theatre debut in third grade in a classic production straight from the class reader. He was cast in a comedic character role then and is drawn to those parts to this day. He continued to act throughout school, and immediately after graduating from university, he once again became active in community theatre. Jack is a pharmacist by trade, and he has lived in Japan since 1987. He made his Kansai debut in The Silver Castle before joining The Voice in 2000. When not on stage or in rehearsal, he can usually be found in the kitchen trying out some new recipe he just found on the Internet.

Daniel O'Brien

Dan O'Brien has enjoyed doing stand up comedy and improvised acting in Japan since 1997. He lives in Osaka and loves Osaka-ben. He keeps a busy schedule, but that makes his life interesting. He likes to practice aikido when he has some spare time. He enjoys acting because of how it differs from doing comedy and improvisation. Dan made his debut in the summer of 2000 with The Voice.

Yoshihiro makes his acting debut in 'Cool, Cool Summer' with The Voice. He has previously had opportunities to go on stage, but he has always managed to escape them until now. He happened to work backstage on one production, and he says that he was so moved by the experience that he made up his mind not to pass up the next chance. He didn't have to wait long. He has now discovered the actor side of his personality, and we hope that he will soon learn that this is not a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Mario Perez

Before coming to Japan, Mario was a U.S. history teacher at a middle school in the city of Ventura, California, his hometown. Now, like many Westerners living in Japan, he is teaching English to elementary, junior high, and high school students. He is 25 years old and it has been nearly eight years since his last time on stage. His future goals include singing on Broadway, and perhaps dabbling a bit in the opera genre.

Bob Sanderson

He is an English instructor who has been living in Sakai for the past twelve years. Playing Jacob in "Loyalties" in The Voice's Christmas was his first appearance for The Voice, and his first stage performance since elementary school.

When he's not acting or teaching he can be found behind his computer, playing taiko drums, or out helping in a friend's pumpkin patch!

Sayuri Tanaka

Sayuri made her stage debut as Snow White's devilish mother while still in Junior High School. She continued with drama throughout High School but then gave up acting to pursue other interests. Sayuri happily returned to the stage with The Voice's Christmas. When not under the spotlight these days, she works in education and lives quietly, except when occasionally singing with yet unknown up-and-coming bands.

Yuta Tanaka

Yuta has been playing interested in music since he was much shorter than he is now. He is a regular musician for a jazz combo and can be seen at various performance spaces in the Kansai area. He is thrilled to be performing with The Voice as all of his favorite teachers are involved in this production company.

Anton Tongue

Likes/ Dislikes: Likes meeting old friends but would prefer it was not at the end of a long flight. Dislikes third-generation faxes of kanji in eight-point font sizes. Likes toddlers. Likes translating material he would actually read in English. Likes being Santa once a year. Likes work, hates working for money.

Why/ how I first got involved with the voice:
The Voice's Christmas was my first show with players in The Voice. After starting out a couple of years ago in improv and solo work, I met some of the other players at shows and workshops. The challenge of doing some scripted work was appealing, as well as the process of rehearsal and getting feedback of direction.

Actors that have inspired me: As a kid I was greatly impressed by Richard Burton doing Winston Churchill's voice in "The Valiant Years" (documentary series). Barry Humphries one-man show, especially Sandy the Ghost.

If I could play any role, it would be... Salieri in Amadeus or the Gravedigger in Hamlet.

My other interests are: Digicam photography, writing, walking, skin diving...

My Favourites:
colour: blue/green.
vegetable: cauliflower
fish: Napoleon wrasse
animal: pangolin
insect: katydid

Takayuki Wakatake

Takayuki is a new face in The Voice, but one of the oldest there. He has no experience of acting, and "Will You Accept the Charges" was his debut on stage. His job is teaching English to business people and pre-school kids, and developing English teaching/playing materials. He lives down south of Osaka Prefecture with his wife and two children, but he often stays overnight at his office in Osaka City. He is not workaholic; just he likes his refuge.

Melanie Watson

Having been raised on an upscale herb farm by three locally famous drag queens and a sheep dog, Melanie Watson is no stranger to lovage and lipstick. She took to acting at a young age and has never looked back. The warmth of the stage lights are forever landing upon her on many continents making her career so far a very sweaty business. Her time playing with the Voice is widely thought of as the golden age of her acting career by biographers and critics alike.

Gerald Williams

Gerald enjoys working with The Voice because of the friendly people. Everyone is always willing to help out, and everyone really puts a strong effort into making the show a good one.
He hopes to continue working with The Voice, and the marvelous Kim for a very long time.

Susan Wylie

Susan has only been on stage once in a dramatic production, unless you count being a cowboy/saloon door holder in high school. She is far more comfortable back stage or working on the web site for The Voice.

Jin Yamada

The Voice's Christmas was the first time for me to join the Voice. I first heard about the group from Mr. Shoji Miyanaga in a translation class around June 2002, and got interested about seeing the show delivered entirely in English. I've had no previous theatre experience apart from my last role in the Westside Story in highschool.

I like paintings such as Picasso, Native Indian crafts (Indigenous arts of Northwest coast) , hanging out with people to bars, travelling. I don't like the cold weather, pessimism, mondays mornings.

I enjoyed seeing the actors/performer I saw on broadway(on and off) theatres, so I guess they would be my inspiration. I admire Charles Chaplin as most people do. I'd be intersted in comedic character, pantomiming. I have experience in translating in Japan, have prepared English translation draft for an academic paper about a Rice Farmer. Plus, I have a M.A. degree in Anthropology from a U.S. University.

I listen to rock, R&B, fusion, folk, classical, ambient music both foreign and domestic but recently enjoy music from the 80s.

Orange and blue would be my favourite colours. I enjoy most types of vegetables (including bitter gourd), appreciate most kind of alcoholic beverages but Kalhua, and have been constantly trying to quit smoking.

Jun Yamasaki

Jun was born in France and spent his first 17 years there. He moved to Japan when he was 18 and finished his High School education at Osaka International School (OIS). He is currently in his second year of university at Kwansei Gakuin University. His passion has always been cars and bikes, but his teacher (our beloved Gerald) steered him toward the world of acting, and now that we've got his interest, we hope he stays awhile.
